The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit has confirmed one positive case of COVID-19 at Silver Birches Public School.

The health unit did not confirm if the case involves a student or staff member. However, a media release issued Thursday said the individual was “at school during their infectious period.”

The school will remain open and an outbreak isn’t being declared at this time as it’s only one confirmed case.

“The current situation does not meet the criteria to declare an outbreak,” the media release said.

The health unit says it has worked closely with the school and Near North District School Board to ensure all high-risk contacts were contacted and are aware they are required to self-isolate for a 14-day period.

“Locally, we’re not seeing transmission within our schools. The health unit is very supportive of in-person learning during the provincial shutdown,” said Shannon Mantha, executive director of clinical services and chief nursing officer at the health unit.

If you think you may have COVID-19 symptoms or have been in close contact with someone who has it, first self-isolate and then use Ontario’s self-assessment tool online at covid-19.ontario.ca/self-assessment/ to see if you need to seek further care.

If you need further assistance call your health-care provider or the health unit at 1-800-563-2808.

If you have severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, you should call 911 and mention your symptoms.
